Business Central updates: the current version and what comes next

Last updated August 2026. Refreshed at every release wave milestone.

Business Central moves on a fixed rhythm that is known well in advance. This page keeps the essentials current: the version you are on, what is coming next, and how updates reach your tenant.

The current version: Business Central 28

Business Central 28 shipped with the 2026 release wave 1 in April 2026. The wave brought new AI agents, including the new Expense Agent alongside more mature Payables and Sales Order agents, deeper Copilot integration, modernised reporting, and a set of improvements for administrators.

How Business Central updates work

Microsoft ships Business Central on a predictable schedule, and the same three rules apply every year:

  • Two major release waves per year. Wave 1 arrives in April, wave 2 in October, each carrying the big functional and platform changes.
  • Monthly minor updates in between. Versions like 28.1 and 28.2 deliver bug fixes and small improvements, with no breaking feature changes.
  • Online tenants update automatically. Administrators install nothing, but they control the update window and schedule when the update applies within the allowed period.

What is next: BC 29 in October

Business Central 29 arrives with the 2026 release wave 2: general availability in October 2026, features delivered through March 2027, and early access expected around September. Microsoft has not published the full detailed plan yet, so we track every announcement on our 2026 release wave 2 page.

Where the official documentation lives

Microsoft Learn hosts the canonical release plans and update notes, and that is where the fine print lives. Treat this page as the quick, always-current summary, not a replacement for the official documentation.

One practical note: Zentriq Agent is updated continuously on its own cadence and works across Business Central versions, independent of the wave cycle.

And if you prefer the news live: the BC community meets at a handful of conferences every year, see our Business Central events calendar.
