What is a Role Center in Business Central?

The Role Center is the home page a Business Central user lands on after signing in, built from a profile and showing the tiles, lists and links for that role.

The Role Center is the page a user sees first after signing in to Business Central. It gathers the actions, lists, cue tiles and navigation that one role needs, for example a finance role or an order processing role. Each Role Center comes from a profile, and every user is linked to exactly one profile at a time.

A user changes their own Role Center in My Settings, in the Role field. Administrators search for Profiles (Roles) with Alt+Q to see the available profiles, mark one as the default for new users, and adjust the layout for everyone on a profile with the action that customizes its pages.

Marie handles supplier invoices. In My Settings she picks a finance oriented role, so her home page opens on journals, bank accounts and counters of documents waiting for her, instead of sales content. During the closing of 31.07.2026 she uses personalization to pin the purchase invoice list to her navigation so it is one click away.

Two mistakes come back often. The first is expecting a Role Center change to grant access: it does not, rights come from permission sets, and a page missing from the menu is still reachable through search. The second is fixing the layout user by user instead of changing the profile, so the next new hire starts from the default again. After installing an app that adds a part to the Role Center, that part can also take a while to appear: signing out and back in sometimes helps, but the change can need several hours to reach every user, so wait before concluding the part is broken.

Treat the profile as the standard and personalization as the exception: decide per department which lists and tiles deserve a place on the home page, apply it once on the profile, and keep a note of it so another environment can be set up the same way. If a user has ruined their own layout, clearing their personalization returns them to the profile default.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my Role Center?

Open My Settings from the top right of the page and pick another entry in the Role field. The home page reloads with the new layout.

Does the Role Center control what a user can see?

No. It controls the layout and the shortcuts. What a user may read or change is controlled by permission sets.
