The Business Central journal for registering incoming customer payments and applying them to open sales invoices.
The Cash Receipt Journal is the general journal in Business Central for registering money you receive, most commonly customer payments against posted sales invoices. Each line records the payment with the customer, the amount, the receiving bank account as balancing account, and the application to invoices.
You apply a payment either by filling Applies-to Doc. No. for a single invoice, or through the Apply Entries action when one payment covers several invoices or the amounts differ. BC handles payment discounts automatically when the payment falls within the payment discount date, and payment tolerance settings can absorb small differences instead of leaving cents open.
Posting creates a customer ledger entry of type Payment, applies it, and closes the invoices that are fully covered. If an application was wrong, you can unapply from the customer ledger entries and reapply, no reversal needed.
BC offers two lighter alternatives for the same task: the Payment Registration page, a simplified view for ticking off received payments, and the Payment Reconciliation Journal, which imports a bank statement and proposes applications automatically. The Cash Receipt Journal remains the most flexible of the three for partial payments, write-offs, and corrections.
