How to Run a Month-End Close in Business Central

Post all pending documents and journals, run your recurring entries, reconcile bank accounts and subledgers, prepare the VAT statement, then lock the period with the Allow Posting dates. The Zentriq Agent can scan your G/L for unposted documents and anomalies before you lock anything.

Step-by-step guide

1

Post pending documents

Check for unposted sales and purchase invoices, credit memos, and open general journal batches dated in the closing month. Everything that belongs to the period must be posted before you reconcile, otherwise your balances shift afterwards.

2

Run recurring journals

Use the search bar (Alt+Q) and open 'Recurring General Journals' for accruals, allocations, and other monthly entries. Verify the Posting Date and Recurring Frequency on each line, then post. If you use Fixed Assets, run 'Calculate Depreciation' as well.

3

Reconcile bank accounts

Complete a bank account reconciliation for each active bank account so the ledger matches the bank statement at month end. Unmatched entries usually mean missing postings or bank charges still to record.

4

Reconcile receivables and payables

Run 'Aged Accounts Receivable' and 'Aged Accounts Payable' as of the closing date. Their totals must tie to the receivables and payables G/L accounts, and differences usually point to direct postings on the control accounts.

5

Prepare the VAT statement

Open 'VAT Statements' and preview the period. When you file, use 'Calc. and Post VAT Settlement' to move the period's VAT to the settlement account and close the VAT entries.

6

Lock the period

In 'General Ledger Setup', set Allow Posting From and Allow Posting To to the new month. Use 'User Setup' to grant per-user exceptions, for example for the accountant finishing late adjustments.

The faster way with Zentriq

Before locking the period, ask the Zentriq Agent to run its G/L control scan: it flags unposted documents, backdated or weekend postings, and other anomalies in plain language so you can fix issues before the close, and the Agent only reads and reports, posting always stays in your hands.
