What is a Posting Date in Business Central?

The date that decides which accounting period a Business Central transaction lands in, distinct from the document date and the VAT date.

Business Central keeps three dates apart on a document. The Posting Date determines the fiscal period of the G/L entries and everything reported from them. The Document Date is the date on the paper and drives the due date through the payment terms. The VAT Reporting Date (introduced in 2023) determines which VAT return period the transaction belongs to, and General Ledger Setup decides whether it defaults from the posting date or the document date.

What users are allowed to post is controlled in two layers: Allow Posting From/To in General Ledger Setup applies company-wide, and the same fields in User Setup override it per user. The familiar error 'Posting Date is not within your range of allowed posting dates' comes from these settings, and month-end close usually means tightening them so nobody posts into a closed period.

New documents default their posting date from the work date (not necessarily today), which is worth knowing when entries land in an unexpected period. Note that the VAT date can be corrected on posted VAT entries with the right permissions, but a posting date cannot: once posted, the only fix is to reverse or credit and repost in the right period.
